Back in 2001 I had just broken up with a girlfriend, she had moved out of our apartment, I had just left one job to work another and I was in need of something spiritual and life-affirming to ground me. I listened to KCRW, a college station here in Los Angeles and had heard a band called Sigur Ros. Just the name sounded exotic. I was working near the airport doing craft service for some movie or commercial, I don't remember what it was, but that day, after working with someone I'd never met before, trying to learn the ropes, after a long day of driving and standing and talking, I decided I had to buy Agaetus Byrjun, Sigur Ros's second album. I drove around the 405, exited some street or other, drove across West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, through West Hollywood, weaving through street traffic until I made it to Aron's Records on Highland Ave. This store was formerly on Melrose Ave. and it was an institution for the Hollywood area, a place to get the latest domestic and imported music. I bought the Sigur Ros CD, with the drawing of the alien, winged baby with the umbilical cord attached. The image, the band and album name, the song titles, all alien and unpronouncable in my mind.
Victory Rose is the band name, A New Beginning is the album title. While they did have a debut album, called Von, Agaetus Byrjun is where Sigur Ros found their footing and made their statement. Mysterious, bowed and textured guitars, slowly paced drums, liquid and bluesy and spacey keyboards and a high, crying and cooing voice singing a made up language that was part Norse, part fantasy, the playing often soaring to a mind-expanding climax.
I bought a small radio to put on my table and played Sigur Ros for anyone to hear it walking by for a snack. Whether they knew the band or not, I hope I spread some mystery to their ears.
