Phillip Caruso's mother supported his interest in photography and film. She kept his father's Leica cameras and film equipment after his passing, recognizing her son's potential interest. When Caruso was young, he learned how to operate a projector and even started a film production company at the age of 15. He initially wanted to be a director of photography, but the path was long. He eventually joined the union as a still photographer, after facing rejections and learning about the importance of showcasing his work with contact sheets.
