Easter Sunday // Pastor Jamie Duncan

Listen Later

The Easter story centers on two faithful women who walked to Jesus' tomb at dawn, carrying spices to honor their beloved friend who had been crucified. These women, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the wife of Clopas, had witnessed the unimaginable trauma of watching the promised Messiah treated like a common criminal, beaten, mocked, and crucified. Unlike many disciples who fled in fear, they stayed until the end and now came to properly care for His body. What they discovered changed everything. An earthquake had shaken the earth, an angel had rolled away the stone, and paralyzed guards lay scattered around an empty tomb. The angel delivered the most important message in human history: Jesus is not here because He has risen, exactly as He had promised. This wasn't a surprise - Jesus had predicted His death and resurrection multiple times, demonstrating that He keeps His word. Every promise Jesus made that should have been fulfilled by now has been fulfilled, giving us confidence in His future promises of eternal life and His return. The angel's message contained both an invitation and a command: come and see the empty tomb, then go and tell others. This same invitation extends to us today. Jesus' tomb stands unique among all graves in history - while we can visit the occupied tombs of great leaders, philosophers, and religious figures, Jesus' tomb remains empty because He conquered death itself. The transformation of the disciples from fearful followers to bold martyrs provides compelling evidence of the resurrection's reality. This empty tomb represents the culmination of God's love story with humanity, and it should transform how we live every day, moving us from investigation to proclamation as we share this hope with a world that desperately needs it.
