Eating Out In Madrid | A taste of Ireland at the James Joyce Pub

Listen Later

The first season focuses on community members who are also business owners here in the city to give you a deeper insight into who they are, why they have a passion for food and how they are coping during this time.

On today’s episode, I am joined by Matt Loughney, owner of The James Joyce Irish Pub, bringing a little piece of Ireland to Madrid through its traditional home-cooked dishes, welcoming environment and relaxed atmosphere.

Find out how he went from working on a campsite in Spain as a teenager to being the only native owner of an Irish pub in the capital  Listen to what he has to say about food and drink trends over the years, why people are drawn to visiting pubs and his plans for reopening their doors to customers again.

What we discuss:

How he ended up in Spain, Madrid and owning the pub

Managing a diverse team of staff from all over the world

What dishes you can expect on the pub menu

How he plans to adapt to new restrictions when opening again in Phrase 3

Why people are drawn to pub environments

Food and drink trends over the years in the city

Food items he struggles to find in Madrid

His favourite place to eat here

About Matt

Matt is a middle-aged Irish guy living in Madrid since 2006.  He has a typical Irish family, with 3 sisters and 2 brothers.  He believes Madrid is a wonderful city and fell in love with it for so many reasons, but primarily for the friends he's made, the atmosphere, the feeling of safety and the cuisine. He has so many memories in Madrid and looks forward to many more. He is fortunate to own the James Joyce Irish pub and is honoured and blessed to work with an amazing, loyal and dedicated team. He is hopeful that when we return to the new normal it will allow those grieving over friends and family, to go to places where there are happy memories with those who have died during the coronavirus outbreak.
