Listen Later

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon delivers profound wisdom about legacy and mortality, stating that 'a good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth.' This introduces the concept of 'name privilege'—the reputation we inherit and pass on to future generations. Unlike temporary pleasures, our name represents our character and continues long after we're gone, making it more valuable than material wealth. Solomon challenges us to embrace the uncomfortable reality of death as a clarifying force. Attending the 'house of mourning' prompts reflection on our own legacy. By reverse engineering our lives—determining what we want to be said about us after death and developing those character traits now—we can live with greater purpose and intentionality. Moses prayed, 'Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom,' recognizing that awareness of our limited time brings focus to what truly matters. Our perspective on death shapes our lives in two critical ways: preparation for eternity through faith in Christ, and preparation for our remaining days through wisdom, honesty, patience, and forward thinking. The choices we make today will impact generations to come, as we are all someone's future ancestor.
