Ecclesiastes: Wisdom for Life Sermon Series // Week 6 // Pastor Jamie Duncan

Listen Later

Ecclesiastes 4 presents King Solomon's timeless observations about human nature and our deepest longings. Though written 3,000 years ago, his insights remain strikingly relevant to our modern world. Solomon begins by addressing our innate desire for justice, lamenting the oppression he witnessed where 'power was on the side of the oppressors—and they have no comforter.' Biblical justice isn't about political ideology but about reflecting God's heart by treating all people as valuable creations, righting wrongs, and demonstrating generosity. Ironically, historical records suggest Solomon himself failed in this area during his reign. Solomon then explores our longing for a balanced life, describing two dangerous extremes: the workaholic with 'two hands full with toil' driven by envy and greed, and the lazy person who 'folds their hands and ruins themselves.' He advocates instead for 'one handful with tranquility'—a balanced approach that honors both productive work and peaceful rest. This wisdom reminds us that work isn't a necessary evil but a necessary blessing ordained by God from creation. When we view our work as worship and use whatever authority we have to benefit others rather than ourselves, we find the satisfaction that Solomon himself sought but missed by investing his heart in worldly pursuits while neglecting God.
