Ecclesiastes: Wisdom for Life // Week 9 // Pastor Jamie Duncan

Listen Later

In Ecclesiastes 5, Solomon - who possessed unimaginable wealth and wisdom - offers timeless insights about our relationship with material possessions. He identifies a fundamental problem with materialism: it creates an insatiable appetite. No matter how much we acquire, we always want more, as illustrated by John D. Rockefeller's famous response that 'enough' money would be 'just a little bit more.'Solomon points out the paradox of wealth: those with less often sleep better than those with more. The laborer does his work, goes home, and rests peacefully in a simple, manageable world. Meanwhile, the wealthy person has built a complex kingdom requiring constant attention and management. Solomon himself confessed to lying awake at night, unable to organize his thoughts about his vast kingdom. Most importantly, Solomon reminds us that wealth is fleeting - 'Everyone comes naked from their mother's womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart.' This introduces the biblical concept of stewardship - we are managers, not owners, of everything passing through our hands. The path to contentment lies in appreciating what God has provided, viewing our possessions as gifts to be enjoyed rather than accumulated, and recognizing that the deepest longings of our hearts can only be satisfied through a relationship with our Creator.
