Diplomatic Security Service agent Brody Hancock left Knights Bridge at 18, a few steps ahead of arrest and the wrath of Heather's older brothers. Though Brody had never planned to return, Vic, a retired diplomat and friend, needs his help.
Staying at Vic's guest house makes it impossible to avoid running into a Sloan at every turn - especially Heather. Seeing her again has affected Brody more than he wants to admit. But Heather is wary of Brody's sudden interest in her, and she suspects there's more to his homecoming than he's letting on.

great book
Echo Lake is book 4 in the Swift River Valley novels by Carla Neggers. As usual, her characters are realistic and well developed. You come to feel they are living in the same town you are. The setting of Knights Bridge is delightfully described. The plot, although simplistic in parts, is full of unexpected twists and turns. Although you assume you know the outcome, you are never quite sure it will turn out like you want it to. I simply love her book.
Heather Sloan is delighted that her father is letting her spearhead the renovation of Vic Scarlattiââs house. She knows she can do a great job and interior design is beginning to really interest her. Maybe she could go back to school for a degree in interior design? However, she has to get Vic to make decisions and stick to them. She is not sure where Vic and Adrienne Portale, his house sitter, will be staying while the demolition and renovation will be going on. Right now, Heather is working with Adrienne on the wine cellar Vic now wants. Adding to the confusion is Rohan, a golden retriever pup, who Vic took in and who is now missing. Heather is headed for the lake where Rohanââs prints in the snow seem to be leading. She hopes she finds him soon and he is not in the lake. When she does find him, she gets her foot and leg wet as her foot goes through the ice; but the puppy is just fine. It is at this awkward moment she meets Vicââs guest, Brody Hancock. It is only later she remembers him from their childhood. He, on the other hand, recognized her immediately. She had definitely changed from the little urchin who followed the boys around.
Brody Hancock was indeed from Knights Bridge and still owned land nearby. However, he hadnâât been back in a very long time. The rumor is that he was run out of town by the Sloan boys; but although they did have a fight just before he left, he didnâât leave because of that. Instead he left to find himself. He was now a member of the Diplomatic Security Service and had come to visit his mentor Vic, who had just retired from being a diplomat. Vic thought someone was playing tricks on him and wasnâât sure if it was that or if he was going crazy. Maybe Brody could find out. As Brody looks into this, he also gets to know Heather again, this time as a grown up.
