Bobby "Bobo the Sequel" Roses, lead singer and bassist from the Vallejo, CA based band, Skunk Funk joins us on this episode of the podcast.
Funky, Punky and Intergalactic, Skunk Funk has an eclectic "west coast" type of sound and vibe that is ever expanding. Their sole mission to bring every crowd they woo an animated, yet uplifting and off the wall experience, and a spellbinding fusion of Punk/Funk/Ska is their medium of choice in their battle against degradation and lameness.
They've pulled from an array of influences ranging from funk to ska to punk to metal and their energetic live shows have earned them chances to perform at iconic venues in the bay area and around the west coast. They’ve performed at numerous festivals such as Bottle Rock Napa Valley, Chalice Festival, Hemp Con, Heart and Soulstice Festival, Reggae in the Trees (OR), Sacramento Hemp Fest, Napa Porchfest, and have shared the stage with such notable acts as The Black Keys, Zac Brown Band, Primus, Violent Femmes, Joan Jett, Cake, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Train, Michael Franti, Bad Religion, The Black Crowes, The Flaming Lips, Mystic Roots, Paul Wall and more.
Off to a prolific start, the band has independently released an EP entitled Too Fresh to Function and a full-length album entitled Possession 4 Sale. Their 2018 EP, Cirque Du Skank, was accompanied by a music video, and a new full-length album, Skunk Soup, was served up 1/23/2021. They plan on recording and performing live again in 2022, when it is safe to do so.
Down to earth and humble, Bobby was a great guest to wrap 2021. We got some insight into his band and talked about the ESP usuals; influences, gigs (and when they'll finally be back to stay), recording (and leaning to do it remote in the midst of a pandemic), cuisine, the Bermuda triangle of shitty bands and something group called "boy island"?? Whatever it was, it was crap and we all laughed at it.
Thanks for listening!
