We discuss the history of ECMO, decision to place a patient on ECMO, and therapy’s role in the advanced care of this patient population. We will discuss modifying therapy based on unique hemodynamic stability indicators, therapy’s role in facilitating building respiratory tolerance and building a multidisciplinary team to maximize patient healing.
