Unity Metaphysics Blue Book 1
**CHAPTER SEVEN - THE PROBLEM OF EVIL**
**INTRODUCTION**
In Unity, we affirm that God is Absolute Good and that humankind, created in the image and likeness of God, is inherently good. This raises a profound question: Where does evil originate? Who creates it? Why does it appear so powerful? This chapter explores Unity's understanding of evil's origin and nature, examining the meaning of sin, its consequences, and the role of free will in its manifestation. By clarifying the specific cause of evil, we gain greater power to transform its impact on our lives. Recognizing that evil is not an independent external force to be constantly feared and fought allows us to confront it from a position of spiritual strength and poise. Evil is ultimately a problem meant to be overcome.
**7A DEFINITION OF EVIL**
> *"Evil — That which is not of God; . . . error thought; a product of the fallen human consciousness; . . . Evil is a parasite. It has no permanent life of itself; its whole existence depends on the life it borrows from its parent, and when its connection with the parent is severed nothing remains . . . Apparent evil is the result of ignorance and when Truth is presented the error disappears" (Rw/64).*
It is crucial to remember that Unity does not believe evil possesses independent, self-sustaining power.
