Eddie Murphy: The Superstar Who Revolutionized Stand-Up and Comedy Films

Listen Later

Eddie Murphy was born on April 3, 1961, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in the housing projects of Bushwick, Murphy grew up in a working-class household with his mother and older brother.

Murphy’s father was a police officer and amateur comedian who enjoyed performing stand-up routines for friends and family. Tragically, Murphy’s father died when Eddie was still a young child.

Despite the hardship, Murphy developed a natural sense of humor early in life. He often entertained classmates with impressions and jokes, quickly discovering that making people laugh could bring attention and admiration.

One of Murphy’s early inspirations was Richard Pryor. Watching Pryor’s fearless and energetic performances convinced Murphy that comedy could be both powerful and exciting.

By the time Murphy reached his teenage years, he had already decided that he wanted to become a stand-up comedian.
