Top 15 Defensive Backs:
Ronnie Harrison 6’3” 214 Alabama - Total thumper! 7 career INTs and 17 passes defensed. He already reads and reacts like a pro and he brings a savage thunder to his tackles. He is a crisp and safe player. Harrison also recorded over 150 tackles in 2 seasons as a starter at Alabama.
Derwin James 6’3” 215 Florida State - Here we have the quite freakiest of those than have ever freaked. I honestly believe he can play any LB or any DB position (beside 4-3 MLB) at the NFL level. Injury history is a major concern (has already torn an ACL) and he played just 26 college games. 91 total tackles, 9.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks as a true freshman (12 games) for the Seminoles! Then after a medical redshirt sophomore season in 2016 he recorded 84 total tackles 5.5 TFLs and 1 sack in 2017.
Quin Blanding 6’2” 213 Virginia - He is a tackling machine but he is not an elite athlete. That may actually work to his IDP advantage as he is likely going to be cast as a box safety. He will need to go somewhere with a clear opening at the position if he is to produce as a rookie.
Minkah Fitzpatrick 6’1” 202 Alabama - 9 career INTs (4 pick sixes), 24 passes defensed. Pro Comp Budda Baker (via Lance Zuerlein). Was basically asked to run around and make plays which may be a sign of immature coverage abilities.
Siran Neal 6’1” 205 Jacksonville State - Can play in-the-box or in the slot. Pro comp Malcolm Jenkins. Devastating thigh powered hitter. Will be 24 in August. The former high school WR hits with elite power. Neal drives the ball carrier backwards with almost every tackle he makes! Neal sizzles power!
Justin Reid 6’1 206 Stanford - He exploded for 94 tackles in 2017 (14 games) after just a 55 tackle 2016 (13 games). 6 career INTs and 14 passess defensed. Very stealthy tackler and super crafty in-the-box. Has above average range and he excels in zone coverage. Very calculated at reading the QBs eyes and movements.
Jordan Whitehead 5’11” 195 Pitt - Complete athlete who was a dual threat RB and Top 20 (nationally) CB in high school. Started at safety as a true freshman because his tackling and pursuit abilities warranted him to be in-the-box.
Trayvon Henderson 6’ 202 Hawaii - 9 career INTs 17 passed defensed. He has the qualities that an NFL safety should have speed, elite burst, ball hawking skills, range and he is a vicious hitter. Production has eluded him as he has only had one fully healthy season in 5 years at Hawaii (which included a medical redshirt season in 2015). He bounced back in 2016 to dropped 90 tackles, and 10.5 TFLs, 2 sacks, 3 INTs and 7 PDs. He flashed at the Senior Bowl and assuming his medical checks out he could be IDP mainstay.
Marcus Allen 6’2” 202 Penn State - He definitely hits with power as opposing ball carriers usually go airborne upon contact. In 49 college games he amassed 320 tackles, that’s 6.5 per game! Just 1 career INTs, only 10 career PDs but he forced 5 fumbles. He may have to make his money as nickel linebacker to gain the trust of the coaches.
Armani Watts 5’11” 197 Texas A&M - He is an undersized gamer that plays free safety but he also hits like a quality strong safety. Very calculated tackler who usually leads with the shoulder below the belt. Although he could wrap his arms more often to avoid missed tackles. He has elite range and quality coverage instincts.
Terrell Edmunds 6’2” 220 Virginia Tech - Decent range but he is not a physical presence like his brother is. He can get bodied by bigger players (i.e. TEs that are less athletic). He is likely a mid round project for somebody. He will have to prove himself on special teams. His coverage instincts are lacking. Might be better served at OLB or in some kind of containment role.
Dominick Sanders 6’ 200 Georgia - 16 career INTs. Definitely more of a deep safety. But he has the speed and athleticism to find more tackles if needed. He can also match speed with slot WRs and he is very solid in both press and zone coverage.
Donnie Miles 5’11” 201 North Carolina - He had back-to-back 100 tackle seasons in 2015 and 2016. Missed half of 2017 with broken forearm. Just one career INT. He is a very strong and thirsty tackler.
Josh Jackson 6’1” 192 Iowa - This ball hawking Hawkeye is just a one year starter. He struggles in press coverage which may limit his impact snaps as a rookie. Although since he is a potential first rounder he could see more snaps than he deserves early on. 8 INTs (2 pick sixes) in 13 games in 2017 and 18 PDs
Jessie Bates 6’2” 195 Wake Forest - He is more Malik Hooker that Landon Collins. Will be very turnover dependent. Very hesitant tackler and he tackles too low. He did record 177 tackles in just 24 college games (7.4 tackles per game).
