Edson Omar Álvarez Velázquez, also known as El Machín, is a Mexican professional footballer who plays as a defensive-midfielder for Eredivisie club Ajax and the Mexico national team. Mainly a defensive-midfielder, he is also capable of playing as a centre-back or central-midfielder.

The Mexico national football team represents Mexico in international football and is governed by the Mexican Football Federation. It competes as a member of CONCACAF. Mexico has qualified to seventeen World Cups and has qualified consecutively since 1994, making it one of six countries to do so.
