U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids near schools and in communities are taking a toll on children and their ability to learn, according to a recent lawsuit.
The National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers (AFT) filed the emergency motion in federal court in Oregon to stop ICE from conducting enforcement operations near schools, colleges, churches, hospitals, and other community-serving “sensitive locations.”
“The mere presence of ICE near school grounds terrorizes students and educators and disrupts teaching and learning. Fear and cruelty have no place in public education or our democracy,” NEA President Becky Pringle said in a statement. “We are taking this legal action to demand that long-standing protections for sensitive locations be restored. The places we go for care, education, and worship must never become places of intimidation and cruelty at the hands of federal agents.”
In the latest episode of Border Report Live, California correspondent Salvador Rivera talks about the lawsuit filed in Oregon. Several California teachers are part of the lawsuit and have given testimony about how ICE raids are harming children’s ability to learn.
