Eight skiers have been found dead and one remains missing after an avalanche in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains northwest of Lake Tahoe. The group of 15 experienced skiers, led by Blackbird Mountain Guides, were on the final day of a three-day trip to Castle Peak when they were caught in an avalanche the size of a football field during a fierce blizzard. Rescue crews battled up to eight feet of fresh snow and whiteout conditions to rescue six people, while search teams discovered eight fatalities, with avalanche warnings extended across the region.
