From the outside, it might seem like Mexico has a trinity or trifecta of death. This trinity being Santa Muerte (Our Lady of Holy Death), Catrina Calavera (the Skeleton Dame), and Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), but they are distinct from each other. And over the years, we’ve seen a growing number of sugar skulls, marigolds, and women painting their faces like La Catrina for Halloween on our Instagram feeds. Which begs the question, is this cultural celebration or cultural appropriation?
This episode of Lifemancy talks about that while learning about Santa Muerte, La Catrina, and the Aztec roots of the Day of the Dead. You’ll also hear from T, a bruja (witch), who has created a coven and radio station called Pura Cora that broadcasts from the border between the U.S. and Mexico.
