Though few realize it, the central work of elders is to keep the peace in the church. Marriage counseling is keeping the peace. Seeing and exposing incest, child abuse, and heresy are keeping the peace, also. Sin and false doctrine oppress and divide the people of God and it is the duty of elders to restore shalom to the Household of Faith.
