Electronic Geek Store Selling Jewelry?! Online Shopping Goes to the Mall

Listen Later

The Shopping Mall is Dead. Long Live the Online Mall!
OK, so physical shopping malls aren’t quite dead yet, but it is interesting to see how the online e-commerce world is moving towards a shopping mall model.
First was the granddaddy of all online shopping, Amazon.
Amazon branched out beyond books years ago, and now carries just about everything. There are retailers who run their businesses entirely through Amazon, where Amazon hosts them in the same way a traditional shopping mall has lots of independent retailers in it.
Online Competition Moving to a Mall Format
In Canada, Shop.ca started up a couple of years ago with the goal of becoming the Amazon of Canada. (Check out my interview with Shop.ca founder, Drew Green.)
And in today’s interview with Chris Parsons, Newegg’s Global Marketing & Business Development Lead and Country Manager for Canada, we hear about how electronic geek store, Newegg, is now doing gang-buster sales in jewelry!
Chris will be talking about Newegg’s use of social media at eTail Canada, in Toronto May 5 – 7, 2014. My readers and listeners who are retailers get a 25% discount! Register at  http://bit.ly/1iwzfuG and ETCA14TFRANK to get your discount!
Newegg.ca opened its Marketplace not long ago, and they are testing out a wide variety of products. They were surprised to discover that their core customers appreciate being able to buy gifts for their wives and girlfriends right on the Newegg site.
Now they are experimenting with a huge range of products, including items like baby shoes!
It will be interesting to see how this evolves. The marketer in me worries that they may be straying too far from their core business. They have a strong niche of savvy computer and electronics shoppers. I think they risk alienating this core if they venture too far into unrelated products.
In today’s podcast, you’ll hear more about that, as well as about:

* their new “social gifting” feature,
* how to compete in the hyper-competitive consumer electronics industry
* the challenge of logistics
* a high-potential, often-overlooked, market: Quebec.
