Eli Escobar interviewed Public Information Officer for Greater Houston 911, Sonya Lopez-Clauson. Established in November, 1983, GHC 9-1-1 is a separate governmental entity (a “body politic,” Chapter 772B, Texas Health and Safety Code). They are responsible for administering the 9-1-1 emergency communications and technology infrastructure for cities in and around Harris and Fort Bend Counties and some surrounding areas. Sonya explained the importance of dialing 911, how to properly use it and how to be prepared when making the phone call. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police/sheriff, the fire department or an ambulance. This summer they are launching their public awareness campaign and community members can set up an Emergency Profile online to better communicate with dispatchers in case of an emergency so they are familiar with the family and serve you better. GHC 9-1-1 is the largest 9-1-1 system in Texas providing the 9-1-1 telecommunications and technology infrastructure for 5.8 million residents throughout 49 cities (including Houston) and the unincorporated areas of Harris and Fort Bend Counties.
