Tonight we feature Elizabeth Lopeman, author of the debut story collection Trans Europe Express (Propeller Books), in conversation with fellow Propeller author Mary Rechner. Propeller Books is an independent press run by a group of writers and editors interested in creating well designed books of high literary merit.

Elizabeth and Mary’s conversation was recorded before a live audience at Broadway Books, a locally owned, independent bookstore in Portland, Oregon.

Art that is universal is honest. There’s a kind of honesty that shines through. Whether it’s a piece of poetry or a painting, I think really good art has something that transcends.

Elizabeth Lopeman’s writing on art and design has appeared in Sculpture, American Craft, FiberArts, and Bitch, and her fiction has appeared in Propeller and Drain. Trans Europe Express is her first book of fiction. She lives in Munich.

Mary Rechner’s stories have appeared or are forthcoming in places including Gettysburg Review, Shebooks, Burnside Review, New England Review, Kenyon Review, and Washington Square.  Her criticism and essays have appeared in Oregon Humanities, The Believer, Propeller, and the Oregonian.  Her story collection Nine Simple Patterns for Complicated Women was published in 2010 by Propeller Books. She lives in Portland, Oregon.
