In which the Reverend Gantry embarks upon a fervent crusade against the vices of his town, parading with policemen through dens of iniquity and delivering fervid denunciations that stir both ridicule and awe among witnesses. His exploits culminate in a bruising physical altercation and a triumphant, if somewhat self-absorbed, return home, where admiration is sought but not entirely found.
