Summary Exodus 28-29
Chp 28
Just a few facts about the tabernacle which was discussed in previous chapters
The tabernacle was a sacred tent which the Israelites carried from place to place on their journey to the land which God had promised them. It was also symbolic of the Garden of Eden.
Aaron and his sons are called to serve as priests. One of the roles of the priest were to care and maintain the tabernacle. Being that the tabernacle is a sacred place, they were instructed to have sacred garments made which were very detailed. It was indicated that as they wore the garments, it would give them dignity and honor. Certain men were chosen to make these garments – men that were skilled at their craft. The garments were to include a breast piece, an ephod, a robe, woven tunic, a turban and a sash. They were detailed in color-- gold and blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen.
With regard to the robe, they were instructed to put gold bells around the hem of the robe and Aaron was to wear the robe whenever he ministered. The sound of the bell would be heard when he entered the Holy Place before the Lord and when he came out, so that he would not die. Aaron and his sons were anointed and ordained. It was indicated that this would be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants.
Lessons/highlights
The Lord was very specific and detailed as to how the garment was to be made, what type of fabric and color to be used. He left no details out, but very specific. That is the way He is with His children. When He gives instructions, it is very direct and specific, leaving no room for our own interpretation of what we think He meant. It is up to us then to be obedient and follow His instructions.
Chp 29 Consecration of the Priests
Aaron and his sons are taken to the front of the tent of meeting, washed with water and dressed in the designated garments. They are then anointed with oil and ordained as priests. Various sacrificial offerings take place and it concludes with the Lord saying that He would dwell among the sons of Israel and be their God. They shall know (from personal experience) and acknowledge that He is the Lord their God.
Lessons/highlights
Just as the Lord dwelled with the sons of Israel, it is His desire to dwell within us, that we would known Him through personal experience and that we would acknowledge Him as the Lord our God.
