Joshua 13-21
Chp 13
Speaks of Joshua beginning to grow old in age and God reminds him of the land that remains to be conquered. It’s indicated that the mountain regions were to be divided among the 9 tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh. The other half of Manasseh, Reuben and Gad had received their inheritance east of the Jordan which was given to them by Moses. The tribe of Levi did not receive any inheritance because the Lord was their inheritance as he promised them earlier.
Chp 14 Continues to describe the land west of the Jordan that Joshua allotted to the remaining nine tribes as the Lord had instructed him through Moses. Caleb requests the land of Hebron because of what the Lord had promised him at Kadesh Banera. On that day Moses swore that the land which his feet had walk would be his inheritance because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly. Now at the age of 85 he received the land promised to him.
In chp 15 -17 the tribe of Judah, Manasseh and Ephraim are given their allotted portions. Because Manasseh son had no sons, only daughters, his inheritance was given to his daughters but on because Gad commanded Moses to do so. There were still seven tribes that had not received their inheritance. He sent men from each tribe to survey the land. He instructed the tribes of Judah and Joseph that they were to stay in their areas. Once the men returned from surveying the land, Joshua casted lots of the land and divided it accordingly. It continues with the discussion of the allotment for the remaining tribes.
Chp 20 speaks about towns that were to be designated as cities of refuge where someone could flee if they had accidentally killed a person and they would be protected from vengeance. There were 13 cities in all. Chp 21 concludes with the Levites receiving towns and pasturelands which were 48 in all. After this, God gave the Israelites rest and fulfilled every promised He had made.
