Those ambiguous emails that arrive with no real detail but already your heart is sinking. Honestly, emails like this jarr me, if the chat is so quick call me then , why the mysterious cloak and dagger email? I've concluded that this is a form of control and a deliberate attempt to unnerve you. It catches you off guard and you enter these 'quick chats' before you know it's an ambush a meeting with you, HR, and your boss discussing an issue or matter you are unprepared for. Therefore, it is important we prepare within the limited information you have, this includes taking a notebook, taking notes of key points, and not allowing yourself to be encouraged to answer questions or comment without the opportunity to properly reflect. 'I didn't realise that this was the topics to be covered in this quick chat, I would prefer to come back to you on this point.'
In this episode, I also discuss permission culture in the workplace, permission to use the toilet, permission to take annual leave, permission to exist in peace. We are working adults we are past the stages of requesting permission to do the basics this in itself perpetuates the control managers and organisations continually attempt to exercise, it's toxic, suffocating, unproductive and unhealthy.
