It’s probably an exaggeration to say most people hate the word “submit.” The fact, however, is the word “submission” isn’t even in the vocabulary of the average person.

You’re free to disagree, but I believe there’s nothing the devil would like better than for us to have no idea what it means to submit—in humility—to God, and to a small handful of pre-selected, highly trusted individuals who know and love us.

True submission is built on humility and trust. None of the three are natural for us. Instead, we’re mostly good at trying to be self-reliant and sometimes reckless.  When we embrace humility, however, the transforming power of God’s grace begins to be released in and through our lives. If we come to others in humility, God’s grace is poured out through us, making it possible to build relationships of trust. Of course, we can’t trust everybody. Then again, as my friend David reminded me, “Conversely, we can’t trust nobody.”

So, today, ask the Holy Spirit to use Ephesians 5:21, which commands us to “submit to one another,” and other Scripture passages to teach you important, life-changing truths about humility, trust, and submitting to others.
