After the passage of this levy, transport unions wrote to the finance ministry and GRA to suspend its operation and have dialogue with industry players. They also told government if it goes ahead to implement it, they will pass on the charges to Ghanaians. As it implementation has started, the drivers believe, government has disappointed them and there is a possibility of over 30% lorry fare increment. The drivers about two weeks ago wanted to increase transport fares but suspended it after the ministry asked them to do so for broader consultation. The union say implementation of the emission tax could force them to increase fares without any hesitation.
