Publisher's Summary:
A string of best sellers have alerted us to the importance of grit - an ability to persevere and control one's impulses that is closely associated with greatness. But no book yet has charted the most accessible and powerful path to grit: our prosocial emotions. These feelings - gratitude, compassion, and pride - are easier to generate than the willpower and self-denial that underpin traditional approaches to grit. And, while willpower is quickly depleted, prosocial emotions actually become stronger the more we use them. These emotions have another crucial advantage: they're contagious. Those around us become more likely to apply them when we do.
As this myth-shattering book explains, prosocial emotions evolved specifically to help us resist immediate temptations in favor of long-term gains. Originally, they enabled us to build lasting relationships with other people, and they still do that brilliantly. But they can also be adapted to strengthen our bonds with our own future selves - who will benefit most from the grit we need to succeed in life. No matter what our goals are, Emotional Success can help us achieve them with greater ease and deeper satisfaction than we would have thought possible.

Behavior Change that Works
For centuries, we have known about the tug of war between emotions and reason. In the ancient play Medea by Euripides, Medea says, âI am dragged along by a strange new force. Desire and reason are pulling in different directions. I see the right way and approve it, but follow the wrong.â
We still engage in this conflict. We make New Years resolutions, we commit to lose weight, to exercise more, to learn new skills, to be a better person. And yet we continue to rely on and believe that reason, our rational, logical brain can decide on and control our behavior.
In his book, Emotional Success, author David DeSteno, a professor of psychology at Northeastern University delves deep into the science around this natural conflict.
In the book, Dr. DeSteno shows the two different approaches to self-control. The one most often used is what he calls top down â where we try to rely on logic and reasoning, ârequiring constant cognitive vigilance to overcome temptations and correct behavior.â Just like Medea, this rarely works. It requires too much effort and ignores our emotional drives.
The second approach is what he terms bottom up, ârequiring the simple feeling of specific emotions. When we evoke these most basic building blocks of virtue â compassion, gratitude and pride â self-control along with other social virtues, automatically blossoms. This offers key insights into how we grow psychology grow.â
Dr. DeSteno builds a strong case for using the three emotions â gratitude, compassion and pride â to help us achieve our goals. He cites dozens of psychological studies â some his own, most from other researchers. The case studies are interesting â some fascinating â and informative.
The book is a quick, easy read. If the book only provided the theory, it would be interesting but not particularly helpful. Thankfully, there are specific steps the reader can take to incorporate these lessons into their life.
Experience has shown that knowledge or rational thinking does not lead to behavior change. We need to engage the emotions.
