Many of us have been in a situation where we have acted out of concern for another person and that my friend is empathic concern. We may not have realized it then but compassion for that person drove us to action.
Empathic Concern more widely known as compassion or sympathy is the last leg of the empathy triad. This is the reactionary part of the triad, the type that makes us jump into action when we perceive someone’s well-being has been compromised.
To wrap up the triad, we speak about the benefits of empathic concern and how to balance the use of all three legs: Cognitive Empathy (the head), Emotional Empathy (the heart), and Empathic Concern (the gut).
