The Power of PennWest

Empowering Student Potential at PennWest

Listen Later

Today we’re exploring the support systems, resources and essential services that make a significant impact on student success and well-being. Our five guests take us inside campus accessibility, academic support, art therapy and mindfulness – so we’ll have something for everyone on the podcast.

First, we have two assistant professors in our Psychology, Counseling and Art Therapy Department.

Dr. Michael Baranski serves as the faculty advisor to the Mindfulness and Meditation Club. Michael’s research explores the cognitive effects of mindfulness meditation, specifically if mindfulness practice can improve working memory, executive functions, and learning and memory.

And Dr. Carolyn Treadon, a registered and board-certified art therapist. With experience in psychology, painting and expressive therapy, Carolyn has provided services in alternative schools and outpatient settings. Her research covers the use of museums in the therapeutic process and using art therapy to alter perceptions and attitudes toward individuals with disabilities.

Next, we have Gavin Mitsdarfer a third-year secondary education English and special education student at the Edinboro campus. Gavin is extremely involved in campus activities, such as the PennWest Honors Program and the local PSEA branch. He was awarded PASSHE’s Keeper of the Flame in 2024.

Andrea Vergnaud is a graduate assistant for PennWest’s Supplemental Instruction program and is studying for a master’s in special education. As a student familiar with neurodivergence, Andrea has become a beacon for students and has engaged in studying the impacts of autism.

Finally, we have Cece Blasdell, a first-year student studying Communication Sciences and Disorders at our Clarion campus. As soon as Cece stepped foot on campus this past fall, she renewed her dedication to being an advocate for student success.
