Encounters With God

In this interview, celebrated drummer Chester Thompson discusses his early life in Baltimore, first gigs at 13, and formative jazz influences including Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Elvin Jones. He recounts receiving his first drum kit through an audition, studying at Peabody Conservatory, and landing a demanding 1973–75 stint with Frank Zappa alongside Ralph Humphrey, including intense rehearsals and a famous two-drummer fill from “Roxy & Elsewhere.” After Zappa canceled a 1975 tour, Thompson joined Weather Report, which sparked a spiritual search that later led him and his wife to recommit to faith at Church on the Way, influenced by Abraham Laboriel. He reflects on decades with Phil Collins/Genesis, teaching Collins key drum ideas, building large drum kits and signature sticks, relocating to Nashville in 1993, financial hardships and renewal, impactful worship recordings with Ron Kenoly and Don Moen, and forming Cosmic Cathedral with Neal Morse, Phil Keaggy, and Byron House.Links Chester would like you to view:https://chesterthompson.com/To Learn More About Ken Chinn:Website: https://www.kenchinn.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Encounterswi...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@encounterswit...To Purchase Ken Chinn's Book click one of the following links.Book: https://amzn.to/3BK6AUzAudiobook: https://adbl.co/3R8TIvySupport us on Venmo:https://account.venmo.com/u/Encounter...#DrumLegend #ChesterThompson #FrankZappa #WeatherReport #PhilCollins #GenesisBand #DrummerLife #JazzDrums #MaxRoach #ArtBlakey #ElvinJones #PeabodyConservatory #BaltimoreMusic #DrumKit #WorshipMusic #RonKenoly #DonMoen #NashvilleMusic #CosmicCathedral #NealMorse #PhilKeaggy #DrumTok #MusicHistory #BehindTheKit #FaithAndMusic #RockDrummer #StickTechnique #MusicianInterview #DrumCommunity #IconicDrummers #christianpodcast #jesustalk #podcast 00:00 Meet Chester Thompson01:29 Baltimore Roots and Jazz Beginnings03:39 First Gigs at Thirteen05:02 Faith at Home and Early Church Life07:31 Marriage Counseling and Priorities09:50 First Drum Kit and Early Hustle11:23 Drum Heroes and Time Feel13:01 Conservatory Lessons and Going Pro15:17 Landing the Zappa Audition18:34 Zappa Boot Camp Rehearsals19:05 Two Drummers and Signature Fill22:50 Tour Canceled to Weather Report26:07 Searching for God on the Road28:51 Coming to Christ Through Community37:45 Life Change with Genesis and Phil39:32 Praying Before Shows with Phil40:32 A Misstep That Pushed Phil Away42:44 Decades Drumming with Phil42:56 Rehearsal Chemistry43:50 In the Air Fill44:57 Accidental Drum Sound46:22 Big Kit Evolution49:44 Signature Stick Design51:55 Passing the Torch53:19 Move to Nashville59:38 Refiners Fire Season01:02:09 Worship Sessions Impact01:07:07 Presence Over Performance01:07:58 Creativity and Humility01:12:24 Word as Daily Bread01:14:39 Cosmic Cathedral Story01:20:58 Where to Find Chester01:24:27 Final Reflections

Guitarist Caleb Quaye discusses his book and documentary Louder Than Rock, tracing his upbringing in a jazz-filled London home with an alcoholic father, early piano and drum lessons, and his turn to guitar after his father left. After quitting school, he found work in Denmark Street, met Reg Dwight (later Elton John), and joined Dick James Music, where he ran a studio, helped sign Reg and Bernie Taupin after an after-hours “purge,” and entered union session work, including taking over work Jimmy Page declined. Quaye recounts touring and recording with Elton John, including Dodger Stadium 1975 and Madison Square Garden 1976, followed by work with Hall & Oates and years of drugs. A 1978 experience of a loud voice began his spiritual search, culminating in conversion on Easter 1982 through drummer Chester Thompson and Pastor Jack Hayford’s church. He later became a worship pastor and Foursquare minister, forgave and led his father to Christ, baptized him, and now shares his story after a massive heart attack to point fans to Jesus.Links that Caleb would like you to view:BooK: https://amzn.to/4eoG5WQDocumentary: https://amzn.to/4vPz0WsTo Learn More About Ken Chinn:Website: https://www.kenchinn.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Encounterswi...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@encounterswit...To Purchase Ken Chinn's Book click one of the following links.Book: https://amzn.to/3BK6AUzAudiobook: https://adbl.co/3R8TIvySupport us on Venmo:https://account.venmo.com/u/Encounter...#CalebQuaye #EltonJohn #LouderThanRock #RockHistory #GuitarLegend #ClassicRock #RockAndRoll #GuitarHero #MusicHistory #BritishRock #DenmarkStreet #MusicInterview #UnknownLegend #HiddenHistory #BehindTheMusic #RockLegend #MusicStorytime #youneedtohearthis #BeforeHeFamous #RegDwight #EltonJohnOrigins #WhoKnew #musicfacts #christianpodcast #podcast #christiantalk #guitar #encountergod #testimony #jesustalk 00:00 Meet Caleb Quaye01:53 Musical Family Roots03:32 Jazz Legends at Home04:55 The Monster Years07:59 First Guitar and Goodbye11:07 School Struggles and Bands16:39 Quit School Get a Job17:55 Denmark Street Meets Reg19:40 Beatles Publisher Break22:37 Running DJM Studio27:37 Recording Tech Explosion30:54 After Hours Sessions33:03 Signing Reg and Bernie35:11 Union Work and Elton Rise38:29 Hookfoot and Elton39:28 Joining the Band 197539:49 Rock Lifestyle and Drugs41:07 Dodger Stadium Breakthrough42:29 MSG Seven Nights and Fired43:27 Hall and Oates Crash44:07 Birthday Voice Encounter48:05 Life Falls Apart in LA48:56 Chester Thompson Influence50:41 Easter 1982 Salvation57:25 From Painter to Pastor01:02:10 Forgiving His Father01:07:02 Dad Saved and Baptized01:14:00 Louder Than Rock Mission01:16:04 Grace Over Rules Closing
