Still in our series on John’s gospel, we’ve reached the turning point, the climax at the end of Act 2. Jesus has finished his signs, and right before the Triumphal Entry, Jesus' well-known journey into Jerusalem (the one with the palm leaves and the donkey) as the story builds towards His arrest, John tells us about the Anointing at Bethany. It’s a beautiful moment where Mary (Martha and the recently-resurrected Lazarus’ sister) shows Jesus she is with Him. This is a prophetic act (she’s anointing Him, like usually only happened to dead bodies before burial) but it’s also incredibly intimate, and reveals so much about Jesus' humanity, and the human need to be understood. It’s a story about missing the point, and the only one who doesn’t.
