Publisher's Summary:
It is impossible for Chief Inspector Wexford not to wonder how terrible it would be to discover that one of his daughters had been murdered. Sylvia has always been a cause for concern. Living alone with her two children, she is pregnant again. What will happen to the child? The relationship between father and daughter has always been uneasy. But the current situation also provokes an emotional division between Wexford and his wife, Dora.
One particular member of the local press is gunning for the Chief Inspector, distinctly unimpressed with what he regards as old-fashioned police methods. But Wexford, with his old friend and partner, Mike Burden, along with two new recruits to the Kingsmarkham team, pursue their inquiries with a diligence and humanity that make Ruth Rendell's detective stories enthralling, exciting and very touching.

5 Stars, Of Course
Ruth Rendell is always great and her Inspector Wexford mysteries are the absolute best. So sorry she is no longer with us to spin new tales, but I'll read and reread her excellent books always. This one is no exception. A great read for mystery lovers, as are all Rendell's Inspector Wexford books.
One of the best Wexfords!!!!
Somehow, I had missed this Wexford and stumbled across it the other day while fiddling Round on my Kindle looking for the most recent which I will be reading soon. The result? I have spent the last three bedtimes rushing through it, glued to every word. I must admit I am not a big fan of Ruth Rendell's other (non-Wexford) books but I love this series and I love the main character and the adjuncts as well. Yes, I suppose there is a bit of contrivance in the plot but Rendell's well-paced, suspenseful writing is such that it really doesn't matter. Ruth. Keep 'em coming!
Inspector W. Marches On -- Thank Heavens!
Ruth Rendell's ability to maintain the quality of her Inspector Wexford series is really impressive. So is her ability to move with the times -- the Inspector ages, but adapts (with some bemusement) to the changing mores around him. This one, number twenty in the series, starts with the murder of a young woman, and proceeds through a web of characters and events -- including another murder. Along the way, we spend considerable time with the Inspector's politically-correct but endearing Sargent Hannah, and with other police characters. Meanwhile, there is drama in the Wexford family: what kind of drama I will leave to the reader, except to note that yes, it involves Sylvia. Altogether a very good read.
A Good Outing for Ruth Rendell
I'm a long time fan of Ruth Rendell. This particular book was well-written with complex characters and a suspenseful plot. It held my interest all the way to the end. I would recommend this to mystery buffs.
Women wanting children
The plot is interesting overall, dealing with a contemporary issue, but the murder cases being investigated by Wexford are intermixed with his home life and relationships within the office. The case is complex, maybe too much so. Various people are drawn in as accessories and end up in trouble with the police, and not everyone tells the whole truth when questioned. The problem is establishing a motive for the murders.
