It’s seven years since Dieselgate triggered a flurry of collective redress proceedings in Europe and saw the EU Representative Action Directive finally adopted. In 2021, over 110 class actions were filed across Europe, mostly targeted at tech companies.
September’s edition of Euroconsumers’ Start Talking Webinar will dive into the future of private consumer enforcement and hear what’s needed for more effective cross-border private enforcement. We will be joined by consumer law academics, litigation funders and consumer groups currently bringing class actions to explore:
- Will these private enforcement mechanisms be able to restrain corporate power across borders?
- How will all these actions be funded?
- Can better cross-border co-ordination of consumer class actions strengthen consumers’ hands and force changes in company behaviour?
- Are tech corporations able to just factor in expensive litigation as a budget line?
Speakers:
- Christine Riefa, Professor of Law, University of Reading and lead Cross-border Enforcement Project
- Marco Scialdone, Head of Litigation at Euroconsumers and Adjunct Professor at Università Europea di Roma
- Paolo Martinello, President of Altroconsumo Foundation, expert in consumer class actions
- Rosie Iannou, Director, Legal Assets, Fortress Investment Group
- Maria-Jose Azar-Baud Associate Professor, University of Paris-Saclay
