This week on the Dad Spotlight podcast we are bringing you Jeff Faulconer, Vice President of Product Development for Story Arc. Story Arc is a great company that is developing some amazing books, applications and more to help engage kids. About Jeff Faulconer
As Vice President of Product Development, Jeff Faulconer oversees all product initiatives at StoryArc Media. He joined StoryArc Media’s predecessor company, Family Education Network, in 2000 and, since then, has held a variety of strategic positions critical to the business. He has managed a number of high profile projects, including the successful launch of Poptropica online.
He also played a principal role in the transition to mobile by leading Poptropica’s development team, as well as managing the external development of the Poptropica Tips and Tricks apps and the Funbrain Jr. app. Jeff Faulconer also directs Funbrain, Galactic Hot Dogs, Mystery of the Map, and other properties. He is not only responsible for the day-to-day operations and strategic roadmaps for these products, but also their editorial, design, and production teams.
Jeff Faulconer is also a father of three and has been with the core StoryArc team for a decade. Story Arc was the Family Education Network (FEN) for many years. FEN was created in the late 1990’s and it was created to be a resource for parents. Though being involved in this they created Some stock traders wanted to create safe educational games Fun Brain was created. The company found that kids were loving the games that they had but they also wanted to work on having some new interactive games that kids could love too.
Jeff Kinney was the creative director early on and was experimenting with flash with Fun Brain. He created engaging games that kids enjoyed within the company itself. They started to try some new graphic novels and books and started to put some books online and it was very popular. Diary of a Wimpy Kids was where Jeff Kinney started sharing the stories that you know and love. They really have worked to provide a platform that encouraged interactive story telling. Poptropica is Jeff Faulconer’s favorite thing that they have created.
When it first came out it was one of the largest virtual communities that were available. Within Poptropica you are able to not only be entertained, but you will be educated too. Jeff Faulconer also found that his kids loved playing in the Poptropica worlds. Whether it be the Mystery of the Map book series or the overall online Poptropica world. Jeff Faulconer also mentioned that he has a daughter that just started middle school this year.
He is always concerned by social media and what is out there on the internet for his own kids and watches the social media use of his daughter. He said this is one reason that Poptropica is COPA compliant to make sure that the site is safe for kids to be on. Each of the “islands” that are in Poptropica are deeply researched before the story is written. This makes the stories very fun but also educational too.
