Engaging Men to End Sexual Violence Against Women

Listen Later

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and I was able to have a candid conversation with my friend and fellow advocate Tony Jones who has worked to end violence against women for over 25 years.

Tony who is man of faith, a husband, and father shares how he came to do this important work and why he believes that it is necessary for both men and the responsibility for the faith community to become engages in ending all forms of violence by men against women.

Here are some statistics to consider, according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center:

  • Every 68 Seconds, an American is Sexually Assaulted. But only 25 out of 1,000 rapists will end up in prison
  • 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted).
  • Almost 1 in four undergraduate women experienced sexual assault or misconduct at 33 of the nation's major universities.
  • About half (51.1%) of female victims of rape reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8% by an acquaintance.
  • Due to the prevalence of sexual violence in this nation, I felt as though it was imperative to have this discussion about this both sensitive and challenging topi but so necessary so that each of us in our respective communities can support victims and survivors!
