🌿 Feeling burned out? Maybe it's time to give yourself permission to rest.
Have you ever felt so tired that you couldn't think clearly, even when you really wanted to get things done? I've been there, too.
In this gentle episode of English Snacks, I'm sharing a personal story about burnout, learning to slow down, and discovering why taking a mental health day isn't lazy or selfish.
I live in the quiet French countryside, but even surrounded by fields, forests and birdsong, I found myself running on empty. I was working late, saying yes to everything, and spreading myself too thin. Until one morning, I realised something had to change.
Join me for a little story about switching off, recharging your batteries, and remembering that rest is essential.
✨ Improve your English naturally as you listen!
In this episode, you'll:
🌱 Practise English listening with a real, personal story.
🌱 Learn useful everyday expressions and idioms.
🌱 Discover how native English speakers talk about stress, exhaustion and relaxation.
🌱 Practise pronunciation, rhythm and intonation with a guided shadowing exercise.
🌱 Build your confidence speaking natural English.
🗣️ Today's useful English expressions
• Burned out — completely exhausted from too much stress.
• Running on empty — having almost no energy left.
• To burn the candle at both ends — staying up late, getting up early, from working too much.
• Spread yourself too thin — trying to do too many things.
• At the end of your rope — feeling that you can't cope any longer.
• Switch off — stop thinking about work and relax.
• Unwind — relax after a busy or stressful day.
• A weight off your shoulders — a feeling of relief when a worry disappears.
And more!
🎧 Make this your little English break.
You can listen at a slower speed and read along with the transcript. At the end, we'll practise speaking together using shadowing: listen to me, then repeat the sentences, copying my rhythm and intonation.
💚 Your little challenge: What's one thing that helps you recharge your batteries? A walk, a cup of tea, a good book, or simply switching off your phone? Give yourself permission to do it.
If this episode brings you a little comfort or helps you learn something new, please share it with a friend, leave a review, and subscribe to English Snacks for more bite-sized English listening practice.

Hello and welcome to English Snacks! I'm Amber, your English teacher and native English speaker from Australia, now living in the French countryside.
October is my favourite time of year. The mornings are cooler, the light is golden, the leaves are changing, and I find myself wanting to drink tea, read books and slow down a little.
In this episode, I'm taking you with me into my October. We'll meet Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables, enjoy some beautiful poetry, learn natural English vocabulary for autumn and cool weather, and finish with shadowing practice to help you improve your pronunciation, rhythm and intonation.
This is a gentle English listening lesson for intermediate ESL learners (B1–B2) who want to understand natural English, build vocabulary and speak more confidently.
🍁 In this episode, you'll learn useful autumn English:
• a nip in the air — a small feeling of cold in the air
• crisp — pleasantly cool and fresh
• misty — containing a light fog
• to bundle up — to put on warm clothes or layers
• to rustle — to make a soft, crackling sound
• cosy/cozy — warm, comfortable and relaxing
• hushed — very quiet and still
• mild — pleasantly warm or not too cold
• to savour/savor — to enjoy something slowly and fully
You'll hear natural sentences such as:
🍂 “There's a nip in the air.”
🍂 “I love the crisp, misty mornings.”
📚 English through literature
I'll introduce you to Anne Shirley, the imaginative heroine of L. M. Montgomery's classic novel Anne of Green Gables, and we'll explore why Anne loves October so much.
We'll also hear a few beautiful words from poets Robert Frost and Helen Hunt Jackson, and discover how simple English can create beautiful pictures.
🎧 Shadowing practice
At the end of the episode, we'll practise together. I'll say several sentences and you can repeat after me, copying my rhythm and intonation.
Shadowing is a wonderful way to move beyond simply understanding English and start making your spoken English sound more natural.
🌿 Your English challenge
This week, look out of your window or step outside and find one thing about October that makes you smile.
It could be a colour, smell, sound, the weather—or even something you're eating.
Then say:
“I'm so glad for…”
For example:
🍁 “I'm so glad for the golden light.”
🎃 “I'm so glad for pumpkin soup.”
☕ “I'm so glad for crisp mornings.”
Try making your own sentence and saying it aloud.

What do you miss when you leave home?
Sometimes it isn't the big things. Sometimes it's a bird call, a favourite food, a familiar word — or even a chocolate biscuit. 🍫
In this episode of English Snacks, I share the little things I miss about Australia while living in France: the unmistakable sound of an Australian magpie, chicken parmigiana (or parmi / parma), and the much-loved Tim Tam bickie (biscuit).
And when I unexpectedly find Tim Tams in a shop in France, a little piece of Australia suddenly hits my heart and can be shared in my new home.
Along the way, you'll learn natural English vocabulary, useful collocations, Australian English expressions and storytelling phrases that you can use in real conversations.
✨ In this episode, you'll learn:
• miss — how to talk about someone or something you wish you had with you
• come to my attention — a natural, more advanced way to say I've noticed / realised
• warble — a musical sound made by a bird
• unmistakable / distinctive — useful ways to describe something you recognise immediately
• a staple food — something basic and regularly eaten
• abbreviated / shortened to — how words become shorter in everyday English
• last but certainly not least — a useful phrase for introducing the final item in a list
• coated in a layer of — a useful food collocation
• much to my surprise — a great storytelling expression
• stock / stocks — how to say that a shop has a product available
You'll also hear some Australian English, including:
parmi / parma — short forms of parmigiana
bicky / bickie — an informal Australian word for biscuit
brekkie — an informal short form of breakfast
Tim Tam — a famous Australian chocolate biscuit
And yes… you'll learn how to do a Tim Tam Slam! 🍫☕️
🗣️ SHADOWING & SPEAKING PRACTICE

I slept in. My son missed the bus. Nobody was awake. 😱
Welcome to another English Snack!
In this episode, I tell you a real-life story about my chaotic Monday morning — and teach you the natural English that comes out of it.
You'll learn useful expressions including sleep in, sleep over, supposed to, a jolt, rather, for that time of day, the only one awake and to see if.
Then it's time to shadow! Repeat six new sentences with me and practise your English rhythm, stress and pronunciation.
And there's a bigger lesson too: sometimes asking for help isn't a failure. It's simply part of being human.

When Your Mind Goes Blank in English? Natural Phrases to Keep the Conversation Going
Have you ever been asked a question in English and suddenly… nothing?
You know the grammar. You know the vocabulary. But when someone is waiting for your answer, your mind goes completely blank.
I've experienced this myself while speaking French — especially when I know someone is waiting for me to say something!
In today's English Snack, we're looking at what to do when you know English but can't find the words in the moment.
The solution isn't always to think faster. Sometimes you simply need to give yourself time to think out loud.
🍿 In this episode, you'll learn natural English expressions to:
• buy yourself some time • deal with a blank mind • give an imperfect answer • break a big question into smaller pieces • keep a conversation going • recover when you lose your train of thought
💬 Useful expressions
“That's a good question. Let me think.” A natural way to pause and give yourself thinking time.
“How can I put this?” A useful filler phrase when you're forming your answer.
“Off the top of my head…” Use this when you're giving a quick answer without carefully checking every detail.
“Break it down.” Take something big or complicated and divide it into smaller, more manageable parts.
“Start somewhere.” You don't need the perfect answer before you begin.
“Done is better than perfect.” A useful reminder for English learners — and for life!
“I've lost my train of thought.” Use this when you forget what you were saying.
“Where was I?” A natural way to find your place again.
🧠 Today's big idea
Sometimes your problem isn't vocabulary. It's content.
Your brain isn't searching for a word — it's searching for an idea.
Speaking a language in real time means understanding the question, thinking of an answer, finding the words, building the sentence and speaking… all at once!
So don't panic if your brain needs a moment.
An imperfect beginning is better than no beginning at all.

English Snacks is a gentle, bite-sized English podcast hosted by Amber, an ESL teacher and native English speaker from Australia, now living in the French countryside.
Short lessons, natural English, useful expressions and real-life listening practice — with no pressure.
Stop waiting for motivation. Start small, show up, and build an English habit you can actually keep.
Do you start learning English with big plans… and then lose motivation a few days later?
Maybe you decide to study for an hour every day. Then life gets busy. You miss one day, then another, feel guilty, and suddenly your English study habit has disappeared.
In this English Snacks episode, Amber explores a surprisingly simple idea:
What if your English habit is failing because you're asking too much of yourself?
Instead of trying to study for an hour, what if you simply listened to one English sentence?
Instead of waiting until you feel motivated, what if you simply show up?
And instead of setting the bar high, what if you deliberately set the bar low?
This episode is a gentle reminder that consistency doesn't have to mean doing a lot. Sometimes, the smallest action is the one that keeps you moving forward.
💬 Everyday English Expressions
You'll hear and learn how to use:
to fall off the wagon → to break a good habit you've been keeping
“I was listening to an English podcast every day, but then I fell off the wagon.”
to get back on track → to return to your plan after a break
“Don't feel guilty. Just get back on track.”
to set the bar low → to make the standard easy to reach
“I set the bar low for myself. I learn five new words a day.”
to show up → to be present and make an effort, even if it's only a small one
“I don't need to be brilliant today. I just need to show up.”
to make a habit of it → to do something regularly until it becomes automatic
“Make a habit of reading one English sentence every morning.”
to stick to it → to continue doing something even when it becomes difficult
🌱 Your English Challenge
Don't try to completely transform your English today.
Make the habit ridiculously small.
Listen to one sentence.
Learn one word.
Read one paragraph.
Say one sentence out loud.
Then show up again tomorrow.
Because you don't need a perfect English-learning routine.
You need a routine you can actually stick to.
💭 A little inspiration
Amber also shares the short poem “May You Always”, an anonymous poem about having enough happiness, challenges, hope, failure, success, friendship and determination to keep moving forward.
Amber is an ESL teacher and native English speaker from Australia, now living in the French countryside. She's also a language learner herself, so English Snacks comes from both sides of the language-learning experience: teaching English and learning languages.
Her goal is simple: to give you short, natural English lessons that fit into real life.
No pressure. No perfection.
Just one little English snack at a time. 🍿

How did it go? How was it? Any luck? How did it pan out?
Native English speakers ask these questions all the time—but although they may seem similar, they don't always mean exactly the same thing.
In this episode of English Snacks, Amber explores 7 natural ways to ask about someone's experience, progress, result, or outcome. Whether you're talking about a job interview, an exam, a first date, a difficult negotiation, or trying to find an apartment, these everyday English expressions will help you sound more natural and understand what native speakers really mean.
You'll learn the differences between:
🍴 How did it go? — the safest, most versatile option
🍴 How was it? — a short, natural everyday question
🍴 How did you get on? — asking about progress or how someone managed
🍴 How did it turn out? — focusing on the final result
🍴 How did it pan out? — asking how something unfolded, especially when things were uncertain
🍴 Any luck? — useful when something has been difficult or uncertain
🍴 Did it go well? — a more direct question about whether something was successful
You'll also get a quick grammar explanation of “get on”, plus examples that show how these expressions work in real-life English conversation.
This episode is ideal for English learners who want to move beyond textbook English and understand the natural questions native speakers use every day.
