In this episode I interview Julie Yoder, an experienced English language coach based in the Washington, DC area. Her company, 'English With Purpose', helps international professionals working for a better world eliminate any final communication barriers, unlock career potential, and confidently lead teams in English.
We discuss the importance of networking; putting yourself forward, or promoting your skills and abilities, in order to get the job you aspire to; confidence building; and presentation skills. We consider the challenges foreign language speakers of English have when they have to engage in social chit-chat outside the formal presentation context, giving, if you like, natural sounding responses to spontaneous questions. This would be easy to do in an individual's first language, but harder to do if English is a second or foreign language for you.
Again we come back to the topic of confidence and how this can be enhanced by working with others in a similar situation. Despite being high achievers in their own countries, some people feel undermined and feel that they are not achieving their potential when they first move to the United States of America. We discuss the technical difficulties of securing the correct visas to work in the USA and the kind of support Julie is able to provide or refer people to for sources of help.
English With Purpose offers unique and innovative language coaching programs for advanced English learners that cannot be found anywhere else in the USA, including their signature program, Communication Vacation™, a holistic presentation and public speaking workshop retreat, hosted at Julie’s farmette in Maryland, USA.
