Study Coach Podcast acknowledging Black History Month USA. In this show we take a look at a USA psychiatrist perception of freedmen (ex-slaves). The freedmen (no longer slaves) were considered to be totally dependent on the white person. A different perspective is given by Carter G. Woodson; freed slaves bought land, built their own homes, built schools, churches.
Slaves who ran away or tried to run away from the white people who enslaved them, were considered to be suffering from a form of mental illness, according to Cartwright. The psychiatrist called the disease Drapetomania. From my understanding the psychiatrist argument is that run away slaves were mad to want to part from their oppressors (interesting).
