In trade, barter (derived from baretor) is a system of exchange where participants in a transaction directly exchange goods or services for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange, such as money. Somewhere down the line, a new business owner is attempting this exchange, but receives nothing in return. The feeling of obligation to give away goods or services for nothing, or so discounted it should've been called a favor.
