Shakespeare scholar, teacher, and cultural critic Daniel Pollack-Pelzner joins Chat Del Barrio to talk about his forthcoming biography Lin-Manuel Miranda: The Education of an Artist.

Daniel shares what he learned from over 150 interviews with Lin’s family, friends, and collaborators, as well as a lot of laughs, wonderful stories from Lin’s childhood, and the serendipitous Hamilton connections that trace back to Daniel’s own college theater days. He recalls discovering how foundational Lin’s mother, Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda, was to nurturing his sensitivity and creativity, teaching him that every feeling is “all grist for the mill”, and early influences such as Meredith Summerville, who first encouraged Lin to direct. We explore Lin’s habit of reworking early failures into later triumphs, from high school musicals to Hamilton motifs hidden in Warriors, and discuss the parallels between Lin and Shakespeare as artists, wordsmiths, and cultural figures, with a look ahead to what comes next.
