As if our podcast was not meta enough, we had to take it to the next level in today’s episode, reflecting outside of the boundaries of the podcast itself by asking THE question: “What doesn’t belong in the podcast?” A large part of what we do in this episode is unpacking our own personal ethics and filtering processes around what does and doesn’t have a place on Mixed Media Minds. We discuss the challenges that arise when sharing stories that are perhaps not ours to tell, while also making sense of the tension between oversharing and meaningfully sharing here on the pod.
We also end up sharing a little BTS, exploring how our involvement in the podcasting process (e.g. prepping, editing, recording) ultimately affects how we censor ourselves (yes, we know its hard to believe that our endearing-albeit-mildly-chaotic conversations involve even the smallest degree of self-censorship, but it’s true). Shifting the focus, we then explore certain conversational elements that we perceive as inherently harder to capture in the podcasting format. Intentional silence, body language, and eye contact are just some examples of features we value in real conversation that we sometimes struggle to capture meaningfully via this audio format. Making sense of these tensions and how we can continue to record soulful conversations is our greatest joy and today’s episode is dedicated to exactly that.
