Let’s talk about the concept of cheat meals.
“How often should I be having a cheat meal?”
“Should it be a cheat day?”
“How can I have a cheat meal and not be completely derailed from my progress?”
I often get asked these questions. Here is my opinion.
F**K cheat meals (excuse my language).
Why would you want to have the kind of nutrition and diet that you would need a day off from? I live in a mindset of every meal feeling like a cheat meal and being delicious, nutritious and healthy.
Cheat meals are heavily used in the body building world. When I was really into competing, I was eating super clean, like plain boiled vegetables or a protein with no sauce or salt, and I had one cheat meal per week. The concept of cheat meals really messed me up. It made me feel like the food that we should still be able to enjoy eating, like a piece of cake, a healthy dessert, a pizza or perhaps a burger are such unhealthy foods that if you eat one it will go straight to your thighs.
When we go on a drastically strict clean diet, it feels miserable when you have a cheat meal or a cheat day, and you feel completely out of control and sick afterwards. It happens because after eating super clean for a week or for a month, our body stops producing certain enzymes and can’t digest the foods that we would normally eat anymore. Or our taste buds completely change and that meal is no longer that enjoyable as it used to be.
I urge you to really get out of the mindset of cheat meals all together.
Every meal can be exciting and delicious. You should have a flavorful diet where you should enjoy every meal every day and never feel like you need a day off from it.
Here is a quick cheat meal guide for you.
1) If you know you are going to be eating something out of your typical meal plan, always, always, ALWAYS track it and do your best to guesstimate the amount of calories.
2) Find a healthier substitution to whatever meal you just love. If you are a Pasta al Freddo lover, you can absolutely make that as a healthy delicious meal. You can pick vegetable based pasta, you can make the sauce of Fage yoghurt, or not grill your chicken in 10 pounds of oil.
3) Think about how a cheat meal is going to make you feel. If you are going out with friends and you have a tradition to eat together, is that really going to make you feel happy, healthy, energized and fulfilled in the long run? That’s a good indication of whether you should have that meal or not.
That is my take on cheat meals. That is exactly what I do with my life and what I suggest to my clients. We don’t actually have cheat meals in Sexyfit.
