Cancelling someone refers to the act of socially disowning a person, usually a celebrity, for doing or saying something that has been flagged down as irredeemable by society. The aim of cancelling the individual is to diminish their cultural capital, ensuring that their influence in a particular field dwindles, this is achieved through boycotting and public shaming. I was once a vocal ‘canceller’ myself until I began to ask the question, where do we draw the line? These days everywhere you look someone is being bashed on the internet, in some cases it is justified but in others, it feels like we automatically ostracise those who do not conform to our ideals and that can lead us down a dangerous path.
