Today, I am talking with Matthew Nuttall a personal trainer from Manchester, UK. Matthew dropped down from 13% to 7% fat to compete in a Men’s Physique competition. Training is a big test of willpower and avoidance, but it is also an experiment with an end goal. After giving up kick boxing, there was a void that training for physique competitions filled. He also puts in about 50 hours a week of personal training for his clients.
Today’s topics include:
* Matthew is currently enjoying boxing training with his clients and the psychology of boxing and his clients.
* Having proactive conversations with clients about the responsibility of achieving goals and managing expectations.
* Common conversations about diet such as treats. The psychology behind treats or wanting something to make you happy.
* How competitions could lead to health issues and other problems such as the rebound effect.
* Being lean for summer and mitigating the rebound effect and the psychological side of things.
* Advantages of being a personal trainer and not having to struggle to get to the gym.
* Everyone seems to be obsessed with conditioning and forgot about strength, and there is too much focus on the trainers ego.
* Perceptions of trainers that a client may have.
* Learning from experts by going straight to the source.
* Getting clients through referrals and some social media.
* Seasonality of personal training and which months are busier and keeping the yearly clientele numbers rising.
* Having your clients best interest and letting them understand that you care and are genuinely passionate about the work.
* What a general session is like, training 3 or 4 times a week, and making them strong, lean and happy.
* How important it is to keep track of how much and what they eat, holding clients accountable on a diet plan.
