How long should dating take—and are you even ready to start? We often treat dating like a fixed “stage,” but real life doesn’t fit neatly into timelines. The Torah frames marriage as the natural destination—“Lo tov heyot ha’adam levado” (Bereishis 2:18)—yet the path there is personal, uneven, and guided by Hashgachah. This episode reframes dating as a process that begins with inner clarity: Who am I? Where am I headed? Why do I want marriage now? We move from surface variables (ages, months, résumés) into the deeper work of self-knowledge. Drawing on the spirit of Chovos HaLevavos—that outer actions are meant to refine the inner heart—we explore why chasing externals (charm, style, status) leads to fragile connections, while knowing your convictions and direction builds the foundation for a real kesher.
The practical shift is simple but demanding: sketch a general life plan (even if provisional), pressure-test it with a trusted mentor or rav, and enter dating ready to represent your true self. Ask: What kind of avodah, livelihood, and community do I envision? How do I handle change if Hashem redirects my path? Instead of getting swept by chemistry or costume—like judging soldiers by uniform—learn to meet a person from the inside out. Your takeaway: before the first date, write one honest page titled “Who I Am / Where I’m Going,” review it with someone you trust, and let that clarity guide each conversation. That’s how dating becomes a path to wholeness—not a detour.
