Competing with the dominant travel companies like TripAdvisor, Expedia, and the many others is hard. Many startups have failed to gain traction and create a sustainable business model in the leisure/travel however Suiteness has figured out a perfect niche for themselves. Suiteness is an online booking platform that gives you access to exclusive luxury hotel suites. Most suites have never been offered online before. On their website you can book connecting rooms, which means you get an entire apartment-like stay with the most luxurious comforts, safety, amenities and service excellence. Families and larger groups looking for better VIP options will find what they're looking for at Suiteness.com
Launched in 2015, Suiteness is currently in 6 cities including Las Vegas, NYC, Los Angeles, Orlando, Miami and London however they have plans to expand to another 4-6 cities in the first half of 2017. Suiteness currently has 100+ hotel partners that represent more than 30,000 luxury suites available for reservation. The company just closed a $5 million series-A round which brings their total funding to $6+ million. The company also went through Y-Combinator and was part of the FundersClub platform.
In this interview I spoke with Robbie about what it takes to build a travel startup in one of the most competitive industries where the market leaders are spending billions and billions every year on advertising, his experience being part of Y-Combinator, how they are convincing luxury hotels to join their platform, how they currently make money, how they acquire users, what the typical transaction value looks like, how they plan to spend their new $5 million funding round, the importance of staying lean and much more.
Thanks for listening.
