With a 6-year gap away from his mother’s side of his family and a 12-year gap from his father’s, John reflects on how this estrangement can make family members feel like strangers with a familiarity.
When there is so much transformation in a person between interactions it can be a challenge to prove to others the level of unwitnessed dedication it takes to be successful. Especially if there’s been lack of acknowledgement for hard work in the past.
In this week’s podcast, Austin points out that most of John’s other values reflect a more critical mindset of focusing on things within control while Amer questions whether proving success to others or himself is more valuable.
Normally with little concern to how he’s perceived, John’s value of verbal positive reinforcement from family is an interesting contrast.
