Herbert Mullin suffered from many delusions. He heard voices telling him to hurt himself and, ultimately, he heard his father's voice telling him to commit murder. This led him to target his first victim in October 1972, a homeless man looking for a ride, and this was the start of his murder spree. His brutal attacks overlapped with Ed Kemper's crimes in California at the time and at first authorities struggled to piece things together.
