Ep. 11: Improvisation as community care - with Nick Fagnilli

Listen Later

Our first guest interview! Please welcome composer Nick Fagnilli to the pod to talk about embodiment, music education, living composers, the art of improvisation, and so much more.

Nicholas Fagnilli is a composer, teacher, and performer based in Pittsburgh, PA. Nicholas received his Composition degree from Ithaca College, and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Music Education program at Carnegie Mellon University. Nick believes that creating and improvising freely should be a normal part of anyone’s musical experience. His framework of creating and teaching is based on the natural characteristics of sound and harnessing these in one’s own unique way. His music embraces the multiplicities of life and draws from a wide variety of processes and styles. His teaching and his practice as a composer and musician have developed a symbiotic relationship, and it is through this relationship that Nick seeks to reach a new understanding of what music means and what purpose it serves in today’s ever-changing world. Through his music, he seeks to discover what new stories and feelings can be evoked by releasing our previous associations of harmony and structure.
